Excavation in Bangor, New York

Bangor is a few minutes from the shop. Long rural driveways, wooded back lots and ground that stiffens as you head south.

Bangor sits just off Route 11 from Moira, close enough that it is effectively home ground. We clear lots, dig and pack building pads, install septic systems, cut in driveways and trench water and power across the town.

Like most of this area, the jobs are homeowners rather than developers. Somebody has a piece of land, wants a house on it, and needs everything under and around that house handled before a builder shows up. That is the whole business.

Long Driveways And Why The Base Matters

Rural Bangor properties often sit well back from the road, which means the driveway is a real piece of construction rather than an afterthought. It is also the thing that gets everybody else onto the site, so it usually goes in early. We cut it in, set the culvert at the road so water runs under it instead of across it, build the base, and top it with stone.

Around here a driveway lives or dies on what is underneath it. Stone spread over soft ground looks fine in August and disappears in April. Frost, run-off and mud season find every shortcut, so the base and the crown are where the work actually goes. Built right, you are not calling somebody back every spring.

Digging South Of The Route 11 Corridor

As you move south out of Bangor toward the Adirondack foothills, the ground generally gets stonier and the bedrock gets closer to the surface. North of the corridor it flattens and holds more water. Neither is a problem to work in, but they are different jobs, and the difference shows up in how a septic field has to be designed.

New York wants four feet of usable soil above bedrock and groundwater for a conventional system, with two feet clear beneath the trenches. Where the ground cannot give that, the field gets built up in imported fill that percolates in the range the state requires. That is more material and more machine time, and it is much better discovered at the soil test than halfway through the install.

FAQs

Bangor Questions

  • Yes. New driveways on raw land are a regular job: cut in, graded, culvert set at the entrance, based and stoned.

  • We build gravel and stone driveways. Gravel is what most rural driveways up here want anyway, because it can be regraded when frost moves it rather than cracking.

  • Usually, yes. Washout is normally a drainage problem rather than a stone problem, so the first thing we look at is where the water is going and whether the crown and culvert are doing their job.

  • Cost guides put installed gravel driveways at roughly $1.25 to $4.00 a square foot, plus $500 to $2,000 for a culvert where one is needed. On a rural Bangor lot the length is what moves the total, because the driveway often runs a long way back from the road.

  • Yes. Septic is one of the main things we do, and around Bangor the ground varies enough between the corridor and the foothills that the soil test genuinely matters.
