Excavation in Chateaugay, New York

Chateaugay is the far east end of the run. Rolling foothill ground where rock turns up more often than people expect.

Chateaugay is the eastern edge of where we normally work, out past Malone toward the Clinton County line. It is a longer run than most of our jobs, which makes it better suited to a full site setup than to a single small job.

The work is the same as everywhere else on this list: clearing, building pads, septic, driveways and utility trenching for homeowners putting a house on rural land.

Foothill Ground

Chateaugay sits closer to the rising ground on the northern edge of the Adirondacks than most of our service area, and that shows up in the digging. Ground on this side generally runs stonier, with denser till and bedrock that can be closer to the surface than it is out on the lowland flats. Boulders in the till are a normal find rather than a surprise.

That is not a reason to avoid a project. It does mean a quote that assumes rock is possible is worth more to you than one that assumes a clean dig, because hitting ledge partway through a foundation changes both the timeline and the price.

Shallow Rock And Your Septic

Depth to bedrock is the single thing New York's septic rules care most about, and it is the thing that varies most on foothill ground. Appendix 75-A wants four feet of usable soil above bedrock and groundwater and two feet minimum below the absorption trenches, with the soil profile evaluated to six feet. Where rock sits high, a conventional in-ground field simply will not fit.

The answer in that situation is a built-up field constructed in imported fill above the natural grade, percolating in the range the state requires. More material, more hauling, more machine time. Get the soil evaluation done before you finalise where the house goes, because on a rocky lot the septic location often decides the rest of the layout.

FAQs

Chateaugay Questions

  • It is at the far end of it. A full site setup justifies the distance; a single small job often will not, so it is worth checking before you plan around it.

  • It is more likely here than out on the flats, because the ground rises toward the Adirondack edge and bedrock can sit closer to the surface. We assume it is possible and plan for it rather than pricing a dig the ground might not give.

  • It depends on the size of the job more than on the mileage. A full site setup absorbs the travel; a half-day job is harder to make work at this range. Worth raising when you first call so nobody wastes a trip.

  • It can, because rock slows a trench or a foundation right down and can change what septic system the lot will take. Around Chateaugay it is a real possibility, so we flag it when we quote rather than pricing a clean dig the ground may not give.

  • Stonier than the lowland flats. The town sits closer to the rising ground on the northern edge of the Adirondacks, so the till runs denser, boulders are a normal find, and bedrock can be nearer the surface. All three matter more for a septic field than for a building pad.
