Excavation in Moira, New York
Moira is home. The trucks live here, so this is the shortest run we make and the ground we know best.
CB Excavation is based right here in Moira. When you call for a septic system, a building pad, a driveway or a lot that needs clearing, nobody is driving in from two counties away. That matters more than people expect, because most site jobs are not a single visit. There is a walk of the property first, then the work, then usually a trip back once you have seen the ground opened up and decided you want another fifty feet taken or the grade tweaked.
Moira sits on Route 11 between Brushton and Bangor, in the band of Franklin County where the Adirondack foothills flatten out into the St. Lawrence Lowlands. That transition is the whole story of digging around here. Head south and the ground gets stonier and the bedrock comes up to meet you. Head north and it gets flatter, wetter and heavier. Plenty of properties in town sit somewhere in between, which is why we walk a lot before we quote it.

What The Ground Does Around Here
This part of Franklin County was worked over hard by the last glaciation, and what got left behind varies a lot over short distances. There is sand and gravel outwash in places, dense stony till in others, and pockets of heavier lake-bottom material where glacial meltwater ponded. Two lots on the same road can dig completely differently, which is why nobody should be quoting your septic or your pad off a satellite photo.
For a building pad or a foundation, the question is what the ground will hold once it is loaded. Sandy outwash compacts well and drains, so it is good news. Stony till digs harder and hides boulders. Heavy silt and clay hold water and need the grade taken seriously so the run-off goes away from the house and not into the basement. We plan for what we find rather than promising a smooth dig the ground has no intention of giving.

Septic, Water And Power On A Moira Lot
A new septic system in New York starts with a soil and site evaluation, the perc test and a soil profile dug down to six feet. Under the state rules in Appendix 75-A, you need four feet of usable soil above bedrock and groundwater, and at least two feet between the bottom of the absorption trenches and whatever limits them, whether that is rock, the water table or a tight clay layer. Where a lot cannot give that naturally, the field gets built up in imported fill instead, which is more material and more machine time.
The other trenches want to go in while the ground is already open. Water line from the well to the house, the underground run for the power entrance, and drain lines to move water away from the foundation. All three cost a fraction of what they cost once the driveway is stoned and the lawn is in. If you are building, say so up front and we will get it all in on one pass.

Yes. The trucks and machines live here, which makes Moira the shortest run in the whole service area.
Below the frost line, and up here that is deep. The exact figure is set by the local code office rather than one statewide number, and northern-tier jurisdictions in New York commonly sit in the five to six foot range. We dig to whatever depth your job and your code officer require.
That is the job we are built for. Clear the lot, dig and pack the pad, cut in the driveway, set the septic, trench the water and power, then hand it to your builder. Everything except the building itself.
Published New York ranges run about $8,000 to $15,000 for a conventional gravity system and $20,000 to $35,000 where the ground forces a raised design. Which one your lot needs comes out of the soil test. More on what moves that number on our septic systems page.
Most jobs sit inside about half an hour of the shop, which covers most of Franklin County and a good part of St. Lawrence County. Past that it depends on the job and on the season.
