Excavation in Potsdam, New York

Potsdam is a longer run southwest, in the sandstone country between the clay plain and the Adirondack edge.

Potsdam is one of the longer runs in our service area, southwest of Moira, and it is worth making for a full site setup. We clear lots, dig and pack building pads, put in septic systems, cut driveways in from the road and trench water, power and drainage.

Being at the far end of the range, it suits a full site setup better than a single small job.

Sandstone Country

Potsdam gives its name to the Potsdam Sandstone, the old formation that underlies a good deal of this part of St. Lawrence County and supplies a lot of the region's bedrock wells. Bedrock being a defining local feature is not a coincidence around here, and how deep it sits is the question that shapes most excavation jobs in the area.

Above the rock, the surficial material varies between glacial till, sand and gravel, and heavier lake-influenced soils as you move north toward the clay plain. Two lots a mile apart can behave very differently. We plan around finding rock rather than assuming we will not.

Depth To Rock And What It Costs You

Shallow bedrock changes two things: how hard the digging is, and what septic system your property can actually support. New York wants four feet of usable soil above bedrock and groundwater, with two feet minimum beneath the absorption trenches and the soil profile evaluated to six feet. Where the rock sits high, an in-ground field will not fit and the system has to be built up in imported fill instead.

That is more fill, more hauling and more machine time, which is exactly why the soil and site evaluation should happen before you finalise where the house goes rather than after. On a rocky lot the septic location often ends up deciding the whole layout.

Potsdam Questions

  • It is at the longer end of the range. A full site setup justifies the run; a small one-off is worth checking on first.

  • Likely enough to plan for. This is sandstone country and depth to bedrock varies a lot from lot to lot. It is better priced in from the start than discovered once the machines are running.

  • It can rule out a conventional in-ground field. New York requires four feet of usable soil above bedrock, so where rock sits high the field gets built up above grade in imported fill instead. That is a bigger job, and it belongs in your budget from the start.

  • Where there is depth to work with, published New York ranges put a conventional system at roughly $8,000 to $15,000. Where bedrock sits high enough to force a built-up design, that goes to about $20,000 to $35,000. In sandstone country both are realistic, so get the soil evaluation done before you budget.

  • Yes. Clearing, pads, driveways, septic and trenching all come from the same outfit, which is the point of doing the run out this way in the first place.
